Product & Process

MACOM is setting the standard for product reliability, incorporating concurrent Design for Reliability in all phases of product development. We are driven by the physics of the technology in Design, Verification and Analysis of our parts and our DFR engineers play a critical role in providing the customer with some of the most reliable products in the market today.

To ensure MACOM’s products will meet your needs today and tomorrow, an in-depth verification process targeting the physics of the technology, has been built into the design process. Highly Accelerated Growth Techniques are employed to provide the highest levels of reliability growth while minimizing the effect on the design cycle. A world class Environmental Laboratory has been established to provide testing resources necessary to ensure the design complies with to your needs. In addition, a Semiconductor Process Reliability Team has been established to provide the process verification/process reliability growth.

Design for Reliability must start with a fundamental understanding of the physics of how and why a technology can fail. Then the DFR engineer working with the design team can design out the potential failure mechanism. MACOM has developed an Analytical Physics Laboratory to provide the DFR engineers with the knowledge necessary to design out those potential failure mechanisms early in the design cycle. This laboratory has been benchmarked by leaders in the industry as World Class Best in Class.

New Product Development

MACOM follows a multi-disciplinary, stage gate process for new product development, where products are designed for quality and reliability, taking customer and product specific requirements into account.  The management of risk is a key component to our new product development process. Risk is evaluated and mitigated throughout the process, using such tools as FMEAs, stage gate reviews and lessons learnt.  Our multi-disciplinary approach to new product development assures that products can meet performance  and reliability requirements, while also making a seamless transition to volume production.

Product Manufacturing

Our strategy employs a mix of internal and external manufacturing, which upholds the highest quality and reliability standards. When designing a product solution for our  customers,  we  complement  our  internal  manufacturing  with  outsourced  foundry  partners  and  other  suppliers.  We believe outsourcing  certain   manufacturing  activities  provides  us  with  the  flexibility  to  respond  to  new  market  opportunities,  simplifies  operations,  provides  access  to  a  wider  array  of  process  technologies  and  additional  manufacturing  capacity.  Our teams have  extensive  expertise  in  the  management  of  outsourced  manufacturing service  providers  and  other  supply  chain  participants.  We employ rigorous processes for supplier assessment and monitoring which assures seamless integration and consistent performance across the business. We also foster a continuous improvement environment that includes process monitoring, failure analysis, customer feedback and other quality management system inputs. 

Customer Quality Support

MACOM’s Quality Teams are focused on maintaining a high level of responsiveness to our customer’s quality needs. We prioritize improving customer satisfaction by ensuring that the voice of the customer is heard throughout the lifecycle of our products.

Our quality teams also drive a comprehensive approach to issue resolution using the 8D methodology. Multidisciplinary teams work with our customers  to identify root cause, facilitate efficient containment, and ensure effective corrective actions are put in place that prevent recurrence.

Supplier Quality Management

A key component to the MACOM’s commitment to quality is an underlying foundation of integrity in our supplier relationships. Within our organization, suppliers are managed in partnership with the supplier quality and supply chain operations.

Suppliers are selected based on a number of criteria which include financial viability, ISO9001/IATF 16949/AS9100 certifications and a manufacturing capability assessment audit. Various methods are then used to manage, measure and drive continuous improvement within these relationships, including quarterly reviews, scorecards, annual audits, supplier development goals, process yields, and overall quality performance.

We work continuously to improve our supplier base by providing engineering and statistical support to supplier to help them effectively utilize traditional improvement tools such as statistical process control and design of experiments. This approach consists of three subprocesses that are mutually supportive: audit, feedback and development.

Product Compliance

MACOM’s goal is to avoid the use of substances in our products, which could harm the environment or human health. We are committed to adhering to all relevant legal requirements, international treaties and conventions, along with specific market requirements.

EU RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances)

The Restriction of Hazardous Substances EU Directive 2002/95/EC (RoHS 1) came into effect in 2006. This regulation restricted the use of Lead (Pb), Mercury (Hg), Cadmium (Cd), Hexavalent chromium (Cr6+), Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), and Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE). A RoHS recast 2011/65/EU (RoHS 2) took effect in 2013 clarifying scope and implementation of the RoHS regulation. Directive 2015/863 amending Annex II to Directive 2011/65/EU added four additional substances Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), Butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), Dibutyl phthalate (DBP), Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP) with enforcement by July 2019.

EU REACH Regulation (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemical Substances)

Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 is the EU Regulation on chemicals and their safe use, requiring the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemical substances (REACH). The REACH Regulation identifies substances of very high concern (SVHC) through a list published on the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) website and is updated several times a year.
